The Course

El Rodeo is Medellín’s historic gem and one of the most technically demanding courses on the Colombian circuit. The routing climbs and drops across a mountainside, with a 600-metre elevation difference between the lowest and highest tees — meaning club selection on every hole has to account for vertical change as well as distance. From several holes the Aburrá Valley opens up below with views stretching across the city.

The Moote & Watson design from 1954 leans classic: tight, tree-lined fairways, small greens that reward precise approach play, and routing that uses the natural contours rather than flattening them. The 78.6 rating and 146 slope reflect the course’s reputation — it’s playable, but it punishes mistakes.

How It Plays

At 1,486 to 2,120 metres, the altitude effect is real but less extreme than Bogotá: expect the ball to carry roughly 5–8% further than sea level. The bigger variable is vertical. Downhill approaches play shorter than the yardage suggests; uphill holes can eat an extra club or two. Wind funnels through the valley in the afternoon, picking up from around 2 PM.

Greens run firm and moderately fast — not Bogotá-firm, but faster than tropical coastal courses. Bermuda fairways, Bent greens on the more recently renovated holes.

Location & Access

El Rodeo sits about 15 minutes from El Poblado — the most common stay area for visiting golfers — and roughly 50 minutes from José María Córdova International Airport (MDE). This makes it practical for a morning round on an arrival day or a half-day fit between other activities. The club is private and members-first; visiting play is typically arranged through an operator.

Practical Notes

Caddie is mandatory. Walking is standard; carts are limited. The course can be combined with an afternoon in Comuna 13, an evening in El Poblado, or a same-day visit to Parque Arvi by cable car — all within 30 minutes.
